Hints and Tips on CV Construction

<  Remember you do not have to tell them everything – here, you really do have the right to remain silent!

<  Make every word earn its place on the page – remember space is valuable.

Do not give them any reason to throw your application away at this stage.

<  Try to keep it to 2 sides only – one side if possible

<  When in doubt, leave it out!

Do not give negative information, e.g. sackings/exams failed etc

<  Make the C.V. user friendly, leave lots of white space.

<  Consider leaving out your schools attended

<  Consider leaving out your GCSEs if you have higher qualifications

<  Try to highlight your achievements and try to make them factual e.g. :

<  Your team has increased sales by 15% pa/£5000 a month

<  You reduced overheads by £300 a week

<  You have reduced absenteeism by 45%

<  Try to put your relevant selling points first (i.e. Why should they hire you?

<  If something does not support your application for a job then leave it out

<  Pay attention to sports and hobbies as you might send out the wrong message-if in doubt – leave it out!

<  Do not mention salary

<  Do not include a reference

<  Never make an attempt at humour

<  Do not include a photo unless it really is your best feature!
